Expanded Opportunities in Marine Sciences/studies

The National Sea Scouts have executed two recent Memorandums of Understanding with two organizations that can expand the horizons of the Sea Scouts in opportunities in the Marine Sciences and Industry.

The organizations that now formally agree to work with Sea Scouts are:

The Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society (MAHS)
is organized for the purpose of enhancing public awareness and fostering appreciation for the significance of historic shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources. Our mission is to preserve our maritime heritage, and members volunteer to participate in underwater archaeology expeditions.

This organization has a complete training program on video with an open book test that is submitted to MAHS for grading with a subsequent in-water field school on an underwater wreck to complete the program.  This training program has been recognized by several states as basic training for volunteers
to assist in documenting and preserving the sunken history of our nation.

With the assistance and donation from the Chevron Corporation, the Atlanta Squadron purchased a set of the tapes and conducted a series of classes and a review for the pilot program. The members of this class who have completed and passed their exam will participate in a field school in Florida and thus, be able to assist the State of Florida and other jurisdictions with underwater archeology projects.

There will continuing additions of trained field school instructors to be able to provide the field school portion of this program to any Sea Scout Ship within the USA.

Marine Technology Society
This organization is one of the leading trade associations that serve research, education and commercial interests in the Marine Sciences and Marine Industry.   There are opportunities for internships at member
organizations, college scholarships, funding for attendance at marine industry meetings and a free membership for Sea Scouts in the Marine Technology Club…. which will broaden the horizons of opportunities for our Sea Scouts.
